(1) The department shall have a chief, executive assistant chief, and subordinate battalion chiefs, captains, and lieutenants. Council may, by ordinance, authorize officers as it deems necessary.

(2) The chief shall be appointed by, and serve at the pleasure of, the mayor. The chief shall be qualified by training and experience and shall have the ability to command firefighters and hold their respect and confidence.

(3) The executive assistant chief shall be jointly appointed from the membership by the mayor and the chief, and serve at the pleasure of the mayor and the chief.

(4) Subordinate command officers may be appointed by the chief on an interim basis as necessary until such time as the members can conveniently hold their regular selection of officers.

(5) Pursuant to RCW 35.27.070, as amended, the mayor has ultimate authority over all appointments and selections, and may delegate some or all of this authority to the chief. (Ord. 548 § 3, 2012)
